Genpets are strange, they are mass produced real living pets (cut them and they'll bleed), packaged with electronic components which provide basic life support.

Genpet in life support packaging

They've been created using modified DNA by a company called Bio-Genica who create them using Zygote Micro Injection. They are then bred in lab farms before being boxed up and sent on to the shops.

As well as the choosing your pets life expectancy (currently 1 or 3 years), the genpet owner also gets to choose their pets characteristics....
  • Genpet Red™ - Athletic and energetic
  • Genpet Orange™ - Adventurous, confident and curious
  • Genpet Yellow™ - Playful and fun
  • Genpet Green™ - Helpful, harmonious and peaceful
  • Genpet Blue™ - Communicative and serene
  • Genpet Violet™ - Imaginative and spiritual

This is where it really feels like this could be a wind up. These "things" sit in boxes, don't talk, hardly even move - so not sure how I would know if my pet is feeling confident, spiritual or indeed anything.

In fact I would be lucky to even know if my pets even alive! It's only the inclusion of a heart monitor built into the packaging that would let me know whether to leave my pet on the shelf or bury it in the garden.

Some of the FAQs about Genpets are positively weird, for example:

Do Genpets feel pain?
Yes. However the Genpets have limited vocal chords so they will not create a large amount of noise when disturbed.

They look scary, not sure I'd want one. Are these really pets? Are these even real? I'm fascinated anyway.
